Insights that Change Destiny Second PartArticle Date: Sep 18, 2011 Redefining Moments Insights that Change Destiny: Part 2

Early in my chiropractic practice, three events forever shifted my professional trajectory. These events would lead me to explore the reorganisation of my patients’ spines in relationship to their lives, and to formulate concepts about the fundamental relationship between structure, behaviour and perception. Moreover, they would set the stage for a very powerful research agenda, having broad implications for the chiropractic profession and consumer, as well as for the academic community and public at large.
The first event involved a rude and antisocial patient who with progressing care demonstrated significant positive personality, behavioural and spinal changes. He however believed he was still no different because his pain remained. I asked his son what he liked most about his dad since he was coming to see me, and his response was that his father no longer beat him or his mother. Hearing this resulted in an emotional and spinal shift in the father that would transform his health and the family’s dynamics in a most wonderful way. For me, I realized that beyond symptoms there were significantly more behavioral and perceptual outcomes that needed to be assessed. This lead to wellness and quality of life research and a new culture for practicing chiropractic.
The second event involved a woman with autoimmune disease who re- traced a rape and transformed its meaning and somatic sensory motor associations. With this, for her there were new insights, resolution of the illness and a more fulfilled life. For me, this lead to a better understanding of the relationships between unexperienced or unprocessed emotions, the spine and psychosocial influences - and later, the inclusion of emotion in my evolving model of spinal and neural integrity.
Unbeknownst to me at the time, the third and perhaps most impactful event would set into motion rigorous and productive research at several universities. New understandings of the spine, neurophysiological models, and novel applications would follow which would set the course towards my future professional and personal destiny.
The Third Event: Producing the Network Wave.
While clinically obtaining a significant restructuring of the spine and its adverse spinal cord tension patterns, I observed a wave like undulation taking place along the spines of a few patients. These patients experienced new perceptual insights and emotions, as well as a restructuring of their spines. The presence of this wave, now called the Network, or Somatopsychic Wave, was one of the factors studied relative to self-perceived wellness. It, along with a respiratory wave, was a predictor of significant improvement in self reported wellness, stress busting, behavioural changes, and overall life enjoyment.
In 1997, Professor Edmond Jonckeere of University of Southern California (USA) began studying the Network Wave. Since then, he has determined that the mathematics of the sEMG signal of this wave evolves with the progression of NSA care, and is a benchmark for the spinal organisational strategies. The Network wave is currently the subject of investigation at several universities for its unique properties as a central pattern generator, individual identifier, and its associated enhanced spinal learning and synaptic connection. This area of study will help the Chiropractic profession to better understand how the spine and nervous system can self regulate and grow. Further papers will suggest, based upon this research, that the synapse may be predominately an acoustic wave phenomenon. This, I am sure, would be no surprise to Chiropractic’s founder, DD Palmer, who stated that chiropractic was founded on tone.
Underlying chiropractic practice is the implicit relationship between structure (the spine), behaviour (of the spine and in life), perception (of the spine, of body and of life), and energy. I refer to this as the Triad of Change. It can answer most of your patient’s questions about why spinal change and transformation can lead to other changes in their life, and how the other life change they desire has a spinal component that may need to be addressed. The ability to care for patients with consistent outcomes of growth and positive development is paramount to the chiropractic practice of tomorrow.
In summary, all developments have a back-story. These three events are major markers in Network’s back-story. In practice we all have had moments of insight, that change the way we look at the world, and require us to step-up to a new level of accountability. Are you holding yourself to a high enough standard and always looking to reorganize to a higher level?
In today’s world every industry is peddling as fast as it can to keep up with the need to redefine and evolve. In redefining our outcomes we will also be redefining the image of our profession. Helping individuals to reorganise their spine and life, with discernable outcomes, assessments and milestones is perfectly suited for needs of the public in our rapidly changing world.
